Goals
Our goals are to kindle a stewardship for the
earth through activities aimed at both developing an awareness of our
environment, in particular global warming and climate change and promoting the
protection of our natural resources through conservation, recycling and
cleanup.
Adopt-A-Highway Program
As part of our
participation in the Adopt-A-Highway Litter Removal Agreement with the Florida
Department of Transportation four cleanups are completed annually. Our road
section is SR5/US 1 from NE 8th St. (Mizner Blvd.) to NE 14th St. Through this
program tons of trash is removed annually from Palm Beach County Roadways. St.
Gregory's participation is recognized by the placement of two signs (North and
South) on US1.
Recycling
The Environment Committee in
conjunction with the Outreach Ministry is collecting used ink jet and toner
cartridges to recycle. Your used cartridges will be donated to Food for the
Poor. Approximately over 300 million inkjet and toner cartridges are sold each
year. These cartridges, if they were stacked end-to-end, would equal about
24,000 miles of metal and plastic or a trip around the earth. It has been
estimated that for every cartridge recycled 2.5 pounds of petroleum products
are kept from reaching our landfills, rivers and oceans. Eligible cartridges
for recycling can be found at
www.foodforthepoor.org. Please bring your used cartridges
to the church and place them in the recycling bin located in Harris Hall.
Education
To promote environmental education and to
learn about our natural environment, the members of the Environmental Group
have arranged visits to Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex for the Turtle Watch
program, arranged a guided tour of the complex and walks to Wakodahatchee and
Loxahatchee National Wildlife Preserves. Look for monthly "green tips" in the
Steeple News.
