Rev. Nancy McCarthy and The Right Rev. Calvin Schofield, Jr.

The Rev. Nancy McCarthy, affectionately known as "Mother Nancy," served for many years during the 1990s as Assistant Rector at St. Gregory's. She was known for her kind heart, dignified presence, and unwavering faith. A holy person and exemplary priest, she later served as Priest-in-Charge of St. Mary's in Deerfield after leaving St. Gregory's. In retirement, she returned to St. Gregory's as a Clergy Associate, and I was blessed to call her both a colleague and a friend. During her later years, she resided in an Episcopal senior living community in Asheville, North Carolina. She was also a mentor and dear friend to Mother Mary Ellen.

A fellow member of our diocese wrote these words about Rev. Nancy.

“There is no one whose deep faith, great courage, humility, resilience, unending hospitality, and joy for life I have admired more. She always told me that she wanted the recessional hymn at her funeral to be 'Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee,' and Nancy truly did adore the Lord with joy." Her remains will be interred in the St. Gregory's Columbarium.

We also remember with gratitude The Right Rev. Calvin Schofield, the second Bishop of the Diocese of Southeast Florida. He served as bishop from 1980 to 2000 and was known for his remarkable sense of humor and his strong, warm pastoral leadership. Among his many legacies was the ordination of Mother Mary Ellen to the priesthood. He also faithfully served our nation as a chaplain in the United States Navy.

The Church is always Christ's Church, yet in every generation God raises up faithful shepherds to guide and care for God's people. We give thanks for the lives and ministries of these outstanding leaders who helped shape our life in Christ. Their faithful witness continues to bear fruit in the lives of those they served.

Well done, good and faithful servants. May they rest in peace and rise in glory.

In Christ,

Fr. Andrew+
